The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at West Virginia University (WVU) invites applications for an Endowed Chair in Asphalt Technology. We are seeking a dynamic individual who will serve as a role model in both the quality and quantity of their teaching, research and service contributions. A sustained record of accomplishments, supported by well-defined national reputation and recognition is required. We welcome applications from tenured faculty currently at the rank of Professor and we will also consider applications from well-respected, high achieving tenured faculty members who currently hold the rank of Associate Professor. This position is anticipated to start in August 2020.
Eligible candidates must hold a doctoral degree in civil or environmental engineering at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must have the ability to (1) develop and sustain a robust and externally funded research program in one or more of the following areas: asphalt technology; asphalt materials; asphalt mix design; construction methods for improved asphalt pavement performance; asphalt testing and characterization; pavement design; pavement evaluation; imaging techniques in pavement engineering; pavement condition assessment using advanced technologies including UAV-based systems; advanced pavement technologies for emerging transportation needs; asphalt binders and bond strength; recycled asphalt mixtures; sustainable pavements; (2) interact with a multi-disciplinary group of faculty and with the asphalt industry at State and National levels; (3) teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in civil and environmental engineering such as materials; pavement design; flexible pavement design, construction and maintenance; and capstone design; and (4) demonstrate leadership in building collaborative research teams among faculty colleagues within and outside the college.
The WVU Statler College currently has seven academic departments, over 4,600 students, and 130 tenure stream faculty members with about 25 million in annual external research expenditures. The college is nationally recognized for high quality teaching and research as well as its excellent faculty and students. The Department offers degrees at the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels and a joint B.S. degree in civil and mining is offered in collaboration with the Department of Mining Engineering. The CEE Department has 19 tenure track faculty members, approximately $3M in annual research expenditures and is recognized for high quality teaching, excellent research, and outstanding faculty and students. Dedicated staff and loyal alumni provide support for the academic mission of the department.
West Virginia University is the comprehensive Land Grant University of the State of West Virginia with a main campus enrollment of over 29,000 students, and a Carnegie Classification of Highest Research Activity (i.e., R1 University). Morgantown and its vicinity have a population of about 137,000 residents and are ranked among the most livable small cities in the country. The community lies within a high technology corridor that also includes several federal research facilities, such as the NASA's Independent Verification and Validation Facility (IV&V), U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
